REVIEW – As an elder millennial, I’m well into the phase of life where everything constantly hurts, and I’ve begun pulling back and leg muscles on an annual/semi-annual basis instead of every few years. When the offer to review the Healing Mosey MoseyLumbar™ Multi-function Lumbar Lift and Lower Back Massage Device came in, I had just pulled my back and was using muscle relaxers, pain relievers, and heat to try to get back to normal. This massage device seems like it might be just the ticket for both regular back soreness as well as acute episodes in the future, so I agreed to test it out!

What is it?

The Healing Mosey MoseyLumbar™ Multi-function Lumbar Lift and Lower Back Massage Device is a device that applies a number of effects to a sore area (the shape and size mean it’s best for your back but nothing’s stopping you from using this on different body parts, except for maybe common sense). The image above illustrates the different ways the massager works: lifting, vibrating, heat, and kneading.

What’s in the box?

  • Healing Mosey MoseyLumbar™ Multi-function Lumbar Lift and Lower Back Massage Device
  • AC power plug
  • Removable back plate for soft surfaces
  • Manual

Design and features

The MoseyLumbar™ Multi-function Lumbar Lift and Lower Back Massage Device is a contoured device with handles on either end, a status LED in the middle, a wired remote control, and two kneader heads for deep tissue massage. A black and grey colorway is applied throughout.

The above shot shows the contoured shape of the device, this works well for middle and lower back massages. The video below shows the lifting (notice the gap between the device and the backplate,) as well as the protruding kneading heads.

Depending on what settings you use, the kneading heads will dig deep and feel very similar to deep tissue massages I’ve received in the past. The lifting traction function lifts 5-10 cm depending on settings, which is designed to stretch the lumbar vertebrae.

On one side is a handle and the AC power port and wired remote. The other side just has a handle:

The image below shows the Healing Mosey MoseyLumbar™ Multi-function Lumbar Lift and Lower Back Massage Device lifted up so you can see the inflating zones on the bottom that lift the device (and therefore stretch your back vertebrae):

The above picture also shows the backplate in a bit more detail. This isn’t needed if you’re using the device on a hard surface, but if you’re using it on carpet or soft furniture it gives the device a more solid surface to push against and thus put more kneading/lifting/vibration into your back.

The remote is easy to use, a power button turns things on and off and then you can either fire up the Auto mode (which cycles through the various other modes) or you can choose one or more specific modes to activate. Each button has 3 settings (green/yellow/red) that will increase heat/lift/intensity.

Performance

The pulled back had resolved itself by the time the Healing Mosey MoseyLumbar™ Multi-function Lumbar Lift and Lower Back Massage Device arrived for me to review, but I’ve used it frequently at night while relaxing and it’s felt wonderful. It reminds me of the high end massage chairs that apply kneading and heat to various parts of your body, but this one targets just your back (unless you get creative with it). The kneading function especially can dig deep into the muscles along my spine and provides great relief with each session.

The heat is good, ranging from mild to pretty warm (the hottest setting is on the verge of uncomfortable for me). Vibration is always nice and the various ranges are again mild to fairly intense (but never too much to handle). I was a bit skeptical about the benefits of the stretching function, and I’m not sure it’s doing much by itself for my back, but the device uses it in combination with the kneaders to push even harder into your muscles, and that’s fantastic for me.

Doing long sessions with every effect set to highest resulted in some soreness the next day, but low/medium always resulted in a more relaxed and lower-pain back.

What I like

  • Actual deep tissue kneading combined with other effects helps me with my back pain
  • Seems built to last, all of the plastic feels sturdy
  • Simple and intuitive remote

What I’d change

  • Price – you can get deep tissue massagers for far less, but if they’re not quite doing it for you I’d give this a try, it might have the combination of factors you need!
  • The device and materials feel light (and therefore cheap) for this price range. After using for 30 days though, I see no signs of wear so I think this is just a conditioned “heavier is more expensive” response in my brain.

Final thoughts

The Healing Mosey MoseyLumbar™ Multi-function Lumbar Lift and Lower Back Massage Device has earned a place as my permanent lumbar support and nightly massage device in my easy chair. Even against a soft cushion it provides a nice deep massage whenever I’d like, and I think it’s going to be a lifesaver during my next semi-annual pulled back episode.
