REVIEW As I’ve mentioned in previous reviews, this is the year of wellness for me. I’m trying out all the therapeutic gadgets I can get my hands on and the Mountrax Scalp Massager looked like a relaxing way to knead away the tension after work.

What is it?

The Mountrax 5-in-1 Smart Scalp Massager is a waterproof massager that can be used as a hot compress, scalp massager and facial scrubber.

What’s the box?

  • Mountrax 5-in-1 Smart Scalp Massager
  • A clear storage container
  • A magnetic (proprietary) charging cord
  • Four extra feet to use for facial scrubbing
  • Some instructions

Features and Specifications

There wasn’t much setup with the Mountrax Scalp Massager since it comes already assembled with the massaging feet attached. I just plugged it in to get a full charge and then gave it a try.

The video is what sold me on the Mountrax Scalp Massager. It has four little silicone spiked feet that move around and around but don’t really mess up or tangle your hair, which is its most important feature to me.  You could definitely use this in the office if you just need a little break without worrying that your hair will give you away as having had a massage break.  The little spiky feet move around and around, kneading your head and releasing tension.  I liked the sensation, especially on my temples and at the base of my skull in the back. It definitely relaxed me.  As a bonus, it also features a red light that turns on while it’s massaging that is supposed to stimulate hair growth. I don’t know whether that really works or not since I’ve only had it a short time, but it’s an interesting idea that you could be doing both things at once.

The Mountrax Scalp Massager has three speeds, low, high, and alternating high and low.  You just toggle between the modes with the power button.  There is also an option to just vibrate, but I don’t find that particularly relaxing. Maybe you are supposed to use the vibrate with facial cleansing or maybe you are supposed to use that with the heat function, I’m not sure. If you’re into that, there are several different patterns of vibration that you can toggle between as well.

The Mountrax comes with four little scrubby feet that can be used when you wash your face.  Switching between feet is super easy, you just pop them off and pop the new ones on.  I used it for face washing but first I had to turn off the red hair growing light because I certainly didn’t need to stimulate more weird hairs to grow out of my face (thanks, middle age).   As a scrubber, it is OK, but I usually use another device for that that covers more surface area (a PMD Clean). I find that trying to get into the curves of my face (like around my eyes and along my nose) that the little feet don’t do as well as my usual tool and it feels pretty weird to boot.  I guess it could be relaxing to use this on your face, but for sheer cleaning power, I would look elsewhere.

I really liked using this tool in the shower, however. I’ve read that one of the best things you can do to increase hair growth is to stimulate the scalp and make sure it gets really clean. Using the Mountrax Scalp Massager to lather up my shampoo left my scalp shiny where I part my hair and it felt great.  I think this could be really great feeling in the tub when you’re having a long bath.

The final function of the Mountrax Scalp massager is as a hot compress or massage tool. If you press the heat button the back of the unit heats up and you are supposed to use it with the feet up (using the curved side) to massage or just enjoy the warmth. I didn’t find that it got very hot, though.  Yes, I could feel the heat, but I don’t think it was that much above body temperature.  It did make it pleasant to hold, though, so I might use it when I’m massaging just for that reason.

One kind of offbeat use for the Mountrax Scalp Massager is on your pet.  They advertise that some pets like it, so I let my pups help me with this review and I gave them a little massage. My dogs are both rescues so they each come with their own set of baggage. One tolerates pets and rarely seeks attention. She was curled up on her bed when I tried to give her the Mountrax treatment. She didn’t make the moaning noise that she does when I really hit the right spot, but she also didn’t leave.  She did look a little annoyed after a while. The other dog really enjoys any kind of human contact but her favorite is a scratch on the bum, so that’s where I focused the Mountrax. She seemed somewhat indifferent, but she also didn’t move while I was doing it, so I guess she kind of liked it. I think if I did it often she’d get into it.

Final thought

I enjoyed the Mountrax 5-in-1 Smart Scalp Massager in the shower and out as a scalp massager.  The other functions were a little hit and miss, but overall it’s a neat little gadget to try out.

  2. This looks like something my wife might like. There’s a 10% coupon on the Amazon page, so I went ahead an ordered one.

  3. Odd that this Mountrax company does not include run-time per/charge, something ANYONE is going to ask for prior to dropping $50.00 on a mechanical tardigrave-looking device!

    1. It does. It comes with a little instructions booklet which clearly states the charge and expected run time from full charge. 2 hour charge estimated, with a full hour of run time.

Yes and I can’t give you any idea. I used it a bunch, on my head, on the dogs, etc. I would guess maybe an hour or two cumulatively maybe? Then let a week or two go by and I went to turn it on and it was out of juice. It’s doing a lot of things between the warm light and the crazy massaging action. I wouldn’t expect it to go all day.
