REVIEW – The first toiletry travel bag I ever had was from the early 1980s. It was a vinyl zip up bag that came with my Remington shaver. It eventually cracked and dissolved from years of use and exposure to DEET bug repellent. I’m not quite as adventurous now but the WaterField Travel Toiletry Bag caught my eye. Will the brand’s reputation for superior bags carry over to a tiny toiletry tote bag?\

What is it?

The WaterField Travel Toiletry Bag comes in two designs: Water-resistant brown waxed canvas with naturally tanned, full-grain chocolate leather, or water-resistant black ballistic nylon with full-grain black leather.

Hardware specs

Dimensions: 8.5 x 5 x 4 inches. Weight: 6.4 oz.

Design and features

  • Large main compartment opens wide and is accessible from either side via dual zipper pulls.
  • Four small interior pockets organize loose toiletries.
  • Two external side slots keep a razor and a toothbrush off a bathroom counter and upright for easy accessibility.
  • Front zippered pocket stows additional small grooming supplies.
  • Nylon side loop can hang on a bathroom hook or act as a quick-grab handle.
  • Water-resistant gold lining wipes clean and brightens the interior making items inside easy to find.
  • YKK, smooth-gliding, waterproof zippers and custom metal zipper pulls maintain the kit’s clean lines.

The first feature I had to check out on the WaterField Travel Toiletry Bag was the exterior toothbrush/razor holder. On one end, there are two slots large enough to stand a slim object. It’s perfect for toothbrushes! What isn’t obvious from the photos is how rigid the material is. The ballistic nylon is just rigid enough to keep the bag’s cube-like form even when completely empty.

If you’re familiar with WaterField products, then you’ll recognize the golden fabric on the interior. It really brightens up the pockets.

The WaterField Travel Toiletry Bag’s main compartment is no different. That color really makes it easy to locate objects. As usual, the Made in San Francisco label can be found inside. Four pocket slots can be found in the main compartment.

Performance

When testing bags, I like to use toilet paper rolls as a unit of measurement. The Travel Toiletry Bag gobbles up two rolls with ease with room to spare.

As for the real world, I shoved in an armful of items I’d bring on a typical car camping overnight. There was still room to spare!

Here are the items laid out. The bag will fit more!

What I like

  • Made in USA
  • Superior construction with premium materials (canvas/leather or Cordura)
  • Bright interior fabric color
  • Bag maintains it’s shape pretty well. Not floppy.
  • That toothbrush holder!

What I’d change

  • Slightly pricey, but worth it. It’s unlikely you’ll need to buy this a 2nd time unless you lose it.

Final thoughts

The WaterField Travel Toiletry Bag is so nice I’m almost reluctant to use it! That’s why I chose the black Cordura, as it’s more resistant to visible scuffs. That’s a matter of taste, of course. The WaterField Travel Toiletry Bag has earned a place in my travel gear.
